This is the night before the main celebration where saluang is arranged, in part to entertain the people who are in the kitchen all night cooking. If you look carefully in the left of the header picture or in the one of Pak Ketua ruminating, you can see smoke coming from the cooking area.
Set Up: This performance involved a pretty big stage, covered stage and a large yard featuring a series of covered tables and chairs. The size of the stage suggest that a different kind of performance, possibly orgen, was expected for the main celebration the next day. The stage does dual service. As is typical, drinks (coffee and water) along with snacks (including cake and something wrapped in banana leaf) were served to the pagurau who attended.
Performers:
Padendang:
Si Sri
Mar Ketek
Tukang Saluang:NPK
Janang: None, as is typical of weddings
Audience: The audience started out somewhat mixed gender, then gradually shifted to mostly male pagurau. There were about 50 people at the peak. It was a relatively small audience because the location was a little difficult to find. Pak Ketua had to stop and ask several people on the way.
Ethnographers: Jennifer & Pak Ketua Notes: We were not present for the opening, so the start time is an estimate. The evening wrapped up a little earlier than usual as the numbers of pagurau had dwindled. This was also the first performance of the season I attended, so I was shyer about about taking photographs, opting to take them from a distance, hence the lower quality.
