Mount Marapi, literally "mountain of fire," is an active volcano situated in the highlands of West Sumatra. Its elevation is 2,891.3 metres (9,485.9 ft). It is considered the most active volcano in all of Sumatra, yet many people live on or near its slopes. It is an important landmark and important to the Minangkabau legendary history as told by the Tambo Alam Minangkabau. In this legend, the region was settled by the Minangkabau people, descended from Alexander the Great, when their ship landed on this mountain. When the waters receded, they descended and established the first settlement, known as Pariangan.
