12020-12-11T14:11:02+00:00Repertoire: Sariak Laweh July 25, 201620List of repertoire at Malam Bagurau, Sariak Lawehplain2021-05-12T19:19:38+00:00This performance was unique in that of all the malam bagurau attached to weddings that I attended in 2016, it alone involved a mix of musical styles: saluang klasik, the reason I attended, saluang orgen (songs, many of which are from dendang repertoire, accompanied by saluang and synethsizer), and orgen (just a vocalist and synethsizer). If a dendang is performed on saluang orgen or orgen, it is from the gembira category, the synthesizer providing a consistent rhythmic backdrop. The timeline for this performance, therefore, has a few more categories. It represents style first and foremost so the user can appreciate the relative amounts of time in each style. Within the saluang klasik style, dendang are represented by their type. When the songs are performed in the style of saluang orgen or orgen, then the type of song is specified in the description. See the following page for analysis on relative amounts of time on each style and each type of song.

Song: "Singgalang Induak"/ "Singgalang Alai [new"]: nobody identified the title for me so I don't know for sure what to call it, but as Sri was one of the performers and she used the title "Singgalang Induak" for the same tune a few days before, I expect that she would identify the tune that way.

Other Names: Role: Tukang Rabab & Padendang, the rabab allowing a performer to play and sing. Sex: Male. Time Frame: Historical-contemporary Figure Source: I heard about him during ethnography; he is also listed in Mardjani et. al. Born: 1944. Died: @1997 (Sanday 2002: 168). Place of Origin: Sungai Talang Place of Residence: Payokumbuah. Year started performing: Trained under the following tukang rabab:
Mak Agam, from Magek
Samsu, from Kubang
Mangkuto Mawi, from Biaro
Rajo Bujang, from Kamang
Relationships to other performers: He was the first husband of the padendang now known as Te E. Performances: Songs composed: According to Sanday, a number of songs about his kampung, Sungai Talang (2002). They are not, however, identified by title.
Song: "Tigo Balai": identified by Pak Ketua as his compositions during performance of it at Sariak Laweh
Recordings: Other notes: Like Ajis St. Sati, he also worked as a bendi driver.
Song: "Singgalang Alai". I assume when the performers were asked to present "Singgalang Alai," they agreed that the tune that went by this title was what I am calling "Singgalang Alai [New]."
Song: "Singgalang Induak". I recorded the tiniest fraction of a conversation which suggests there was some confusion over titles and tunes, so the performers then presented a tune identified in my notes as "Singgalang Induak," but it should be noted that the variant they produced under this title--or at least what I have labeled as "Singgalang Induak"--is "Singgalang Alai [Old]," the same tune Mak Ajis St. Sati idenitified as "Singgalang Alai" at Bagurau di Udaro in September of that year. From the perspective 17 years later, I wish I had recorded the whole conversation for what insight it might sharing about this naming mystery.
