Song in the Sumatran Highlands

Song: "Manjalang Subuah"

Translation of Title: The title of this song translates as "to approach subuh (dawn)." Saluang performances end before subuh, in time for the morning prayer.
Explanation: According Mak Lenggang, "Manjalang Subuah" is one of the songs, like "Bacarai Kasiah," that is sung immediately prior to "Jalu-Jalu," the songs used at the end of a performance. Once this song is performed, the audience knows that the end is coming and they no longer make specific song requests. If they do make requests, it’s clear they don't know the etiquette of a saluang performance. (Informal interview, July 27, 2015).
