Song in the Sumatran Highlands

Song: "Jambatan Tangah"

Translation of Title: "Middle Bridge." While this could be a metaphorical title, I think it is more likely the reference is to one of the many bridges over rivers that feed into Lake Maninjau.
Composer: Unknown.
Type of song: None.
Place affiliations: Lake Maninjau.Source: Te E's List of Songs.
Description: Martis told me during the performance [link to Performance: Pariangan] where we heard this song performed, that "Jambatan Tangah" resembles two other songs from this area, "Suntiang Patah Batikam" and "Tigo Giriak." They are similar in the particular style of ornamentation (personal communication, Feburary 10, 2004). The ornamentation used in these songs, then, provides a link between musical aesthetics and regional identity. This connection also suggests that a trained listener could hear a song and have a sense of which region it is from based on melodic content and other factors.
