As an instrument, it refers to a small brass kettle gong. As an ensemble, it refers to a collection of those small brass kettle gongs, amplified with hanging gongs, drums, and other percussion. The particular instrumentation, tuning, style, and gender of performers depends on the nagari, with considerable range throughout West Sumatra (see Chapter 2 of Fraser 2015). Talempong Unggan, is one of the more broadly known practices, perhaps because of the song named after it (see also Gongs and Drums from Sumatra).  There are also more contemporary ensembles that are pan-Minangkabau, such as Talempong Kreasi and Talempong Goyang (chapters 4 and 5, respectively).
