  Set up: The performance was staged in the front of someone's front yard, with a temporary stage covered by a large plastic canopy stretched over bamboo poles. On stage, mattresses were covered with embroidered pieces of cloth, and the sides of the stage similarly draped. Plastic chairs for the audience were set out in rows facing the stage. People were still setting up and adjusting the sound system as the performance started. The quality was particularly bad: I noticed that a padendang expressed displeasure at the microphone.

  Audience: This performance had more women and children present than any other I had previously attended since the start of fieldwork. When I asked Martis about their presence, he said it was partially about the context but also because they are interested in the genre, an interest which changes from region to region and is quite strong in Pariangan (possibly as it is home to famous singers, like Syamsimar). 
  
  The seats were provided for the “real” pagurau and invited guests, people who received the invitations; they were deliberately kept empty until their arrival. Women, children and some other men stood around the edges. Some women later found stones to perch on. This crowd of local onlookers started to thin out towards midnight. There were probably 200 people there at the peak. Some of the pagurau—regulars that the padendang recognize by visage--traveled from relatively nearby locations, like Batusangkar, Batipuah, Padang Panjang. Some came from as far away as Payokumbuah, which back then was probably at least a two-hour drive.

  Occasion: Wedding. This performance took place at a wedding during the main celebration during the day. As Martis told me in advance of the event, it is "entertainment to greet the guests." The hosts for this particular event were related to famous padendang, Syamsimar. This might help explain why the hosts chose saluang dangdut for the daytime celebration rather than more common popular styles. 
  
  Set up: A full stage was erected in the yard of a house across the street from the host's house. A canopy was also erected stretching across the two spaces. Part of it housed the team welcoming guests. The other part covered tables and chairs where guests would sit to eat.

"The past" I speak of here is a relatively close past, one established through oral history and recollected memories of the oldest generation I consulted and from archival sources that exist. It ranges from the earliest part of the twentieth century through the end of the century to 1998, when I first traveled to West Sumatra. Some people I worked with during fieldwork began their careers in the mid-twentieth century, but many only in the late twentieth century. I've distinguished those that were inactive or deceased by the time my fieldwork began as "historical figures" and those active during my fieldwork "contemporary." Some, of course, straddle the two periods. Although somewhat arbitrary, it helps parse the development of the genre. 
  
  In recreating this partial history, I have consulted several different sources: 
  • discussion with older performers and devotees who recall performers from the past, including their own teachers and co-performers
  • archival sources, such as research reports generated by ASKI (now ISI)
  • commercial 78rpm recordings
  One of the most valuable sources about performers of the past I have consulted, includes Mardjani et. al.'s research report. Published in 1988, it includes interviews with key figures, consultation with them to name other performers, along with a chart that attempts to map lineage. As the authors themselves acknowledge, it is not comprehensive, but from the perspective of 2021, it provides invaluable data, a window into a world otherwise lost. I have relied on that data to re-create a very partial history of saluang in the 20th century. The genre is likely much older than that, but we have no historical record beyond this and the earliest 78 records, the first with saluang dating to 1938. 
  
  The records in Mardjani et. al. are incomplete. We have approximate years of birth for some performers (extrapolated from estimated age at the time of publication of the research report), and a few dates of death. But for many we have nothing. There are also a few inconsistencies in names and/or roles. I have relied on the lineage chart included, labeling what seem to be generations of performers based on who trained them, more than age. The terms "1st generation," "2nd generation" etc. are mine, to help give a sense of time. I was lucky to meet and interview several of the performers of the 4th and 5th generations listed here, including Ajis St. Sati, Syamsimar, and Sawir St. Mudo.
