Syamsimar's story
image_header
2021-03-19T18:11:30+00:00
Syamsimar’s story, as Erlinda points out, is very different from her seniors, Nurana and Ani. She “did not experience severe challenges in carrying out and developing her career. [Instead,] the whole family encouraged Samsimar's passion and talent, especially since the teacher was her own father, M. Dt. Tambijo.” (CITATION)
The dates in her biography, like that of other older figures, are a little hazy. During an interview with me in 2004, she asserted she started singing in 1965, when she was 28. That would mean she was born in 1937, but she claimed to be 60, so that would mean 1944. Meanwhile, she told Erlinda she was 57 in 1999, making her born around 1942, and that she started singing at 25, so around 1967. Yet another account suggests she was born in 1945 (Wadrizal) and started singing at age 20, while an obituary suggests she died at age 75, and thus was born in 1936. I don’t know that we can ever ascertain the “truth,” rather the lack of specificity speaks to the fact people weren’t concerned to keep documentation about births back then. Sawir had the same hesitancy in saying what year he was born for sure.

More consistent in the historical recording is the time frame when she started singing: around 1965. And this seems accurate if she started making albums in 1967. Malin Cayo, a contemporary tukang saluang who was her student, said Syamsimar was active from the 1960s until five years before her death, so about 2006. In the 1970s, she started a very active recording career, releasing many titles. “There were few other saluang singers doing so at the time, so her recordings were always eagerly awaited.” (obit.) “Until the mid-2000s,” the period when I had the opportunity to hear her sing and interview her, “the name Syamsimar was still flying,” an expression which means that she was still very well known and popular. She was frequently invited as a singer outside of West Sumatra, including travel to Malaysia.
An obituary for Syamsimar, credits her for “producing dozens of successive artists in saluang,” students who are still active. They include “Nel, Ayu and Oca.” (Obit). I believe the “Ayu” referenced here might be Ayu Lestari; I am not sure about the other two names.
In addition to this legacy of padendang she trained, she is credited with “creating dozens of classic saluang songs,” which include “Piaman Lamo,” “Guguak Maniti Ameh,” “Manyongsong Riak” dan “Lintau Basiang” (obit). It’s telling, however, that she is less recognized than her male peers, such as Ajis St. Sati and Mak Sawir, for creating these songs. See her bio for a longer list of songs credited to her.
Finally, the most fascinating tidbit from her obituary suggests that Syamsimar was “good at playing saluang, sarunai and bansi” (obit.). I’ve not encountered public acknowledgment of a woman who played before.- obituary
