Song in the Sumatran Highlands

Role: Composer

We use this term to refer to people who are involved in act of creating entirely new songs or re-arranging material from other genres for import into the saluang repertoire. They either claim authorship or authorship has been attributed to them.

While all saluang songs were composed by people at some point in time, it's only within recent memory that specific song titles have been attributed to specific people. I have a couple of thoughts about why this might be so, including colonial influence through the concept of specific attribution along with the rise of the recording industry and marketing albums with new material. Those individuals that are recognized for creating new songs--for example, Ajis St. Sati, Syamsimar, and Mak Sawir--all had very active recording portfolios. In blog posts and newspaper accounts of their contributions and passing, their songs are listed. Some of the information here comes from ethnography, including conversations at events, during lessons, and interviews with the composers themselves.

However, the historical record regarding attribution is imprecise and the authorship is contested. It might be that someone re-arranged material known by a specific title for saluang from pop or other genres. We will try to indicate when authorship is contested. It is important to acknowledge the claims of the composer-singers themselves.
