It establishes the rhythm of the song. Literally the term means "a saluang tour."
Their use is at the discretion of the saluang player. As in the following example of "Pariaman Panjang" where the singer didn't enter straight away, so the saluang filled in with a raun.

These are usually a structured part of the song: meaning it is always typical to have a kolorok at this specific point. For example, in "Pariaman Panjang" there is always a kolorok after the first line of verse.
For example, In addition to being an important structural part of the song, kolorok provide space for the padendang a momentary pause to catch their breath between halves, to order their thoughts.
