Term: kolorok

"Kolorok" is a term that refers to a saluang interlude that is in between two sections of melodic material, whether two verses or even within a verse, or used for the end of a section or song. These are usually a structured part of the song: meaning it is always typical to have a kolorok at this specific point. For example, in "Pariaman Panjang" there is always a kolorok after the first line of verse.

In addition to being an important structural part of the song, kolorok provide space for the padendang a momentary pause to catch their breath between halves, to order their thoughts. 

Cf. raun saluang, which is a longer saluang interlude typically found only between whole verses or melodic cycles. Their use is at the discretion of the saluang player.
