Ratok are considered "sad songs." Etymologically, "ratok" is the Minangkabau word for mourning or lamentation. One of current songs identified as a ratok, "Suayan Maik Ka Turun" (literally "corpse to go down" from Suayan), is indeed about the act of interment. Most ratok, however, are not lamentations connected with death.
Songs identified as ratok are unmetered, meaning there is no discernible pulse throughout, and they tend to be highly ornamented. Some people consider ratok to be the quintessential type of song in saluang as they are affiliated with songs of longing for home and songs of loss (of places, people, relationships), etc. With the right poetic texts, these songs are known to move listeners to deep introspection (as seen in the image above) and even usher in tears. They often are requested and/or timed to be delivered in the latter part of a performance, starting around 1 a.m. Ratok are also considered the true test of a padendang's skill, both in execution of melodic material and ornamentation but also the subtlety of lyric content. The best padendang are specialists in ratok. Mak Sawir, for instance, was renowned for his delivery of ratok. Padendang often go into a deep headspace, closing their eyes, as they deliver these songs. Mak Sawir often cupped his ear. Listeners, too, shift to an internal focus during the delivery of ratok, moved by lyrics to reminisce about losses in their own lives.

Pantun parasaian (literally pantun of suffering) about longing and loss are considered by many to be at the heart of the genre, the ability to evoke in song what could often not be expressed directly in daily conversation. Mak Sawir was celebrated for his mastery over this type of poetry, his ability to evoke deep emotion through subtlety. He told me in 2010, that he was able to bring a man to tears and even once convinced a man to return home to his estranged wife and children.
The subjects of pantun parasaian cover longing and loss for people and places, especially the homeland or kampung (village of origin) left behind people marantau (migrate) to seek economic and educational opportunities. Historically, the practice was gendered male, and the textual references mostly make these gendered assumptions about men longing for their village of origin.
Pantun parasaian are key texts in songs identified as ratok, including Singgalang. They are also found in those that are satangah tiang, but they would never be found in a gembira song, the sentiment entirely inappropriate for the character of the tune.
