Song in the Sumatran Highlands

Place: Darek

In the Tambo Alam Minangkabau, the Minangkabau region is divided into two main parts: the darek and the rantau. "Darek" is the Minangkabau word that literally means the mountainous interior, but it is also a bounded region in the mountainous interior of West Sumatra. The darek is considered the cultural heartland of the Minangkabau region.

The darek consists of the luak nan tigo (the three regions): these are Agam, Limo Puluah Koto, and Tanah Data. In contemporary Indonesia, these have become the names of kabupaten (regencies). The original settlers of the lands that came to be known as Minangkabau lands initially arrived in what is known as the darek and eventually spread out to the areas known as the rantau.
