Song in the Sumatran Highlands

Genre: Saluang Darek

The saluang darek, an oblique flute made from bamboo, is from the darek. When people say "saluang" without any other qualification, they typically mean this flute and the songs it accompanies.

The instrument comes in a couple of different sizes, both lengths and diameters, as seen in the image. The end used as a mouthpiece has a beveled edge. There are four finger holes, all on the front of the instrument. The instrument can be plain or involve decorative touches.

This is the primary dendang genre historically found throughout the darek, and now found beyond it's borders.
