Song in the Sumatran Highlands

Genre: Saluang Panjang

The saluang panjang, literally “long saluang,” is another regional saluang flute, this one from Muaro Labuah in Solok Salatan. Its name is derived from the fact it is longer than the other saluang, 72-80cm, rather than the more typical 60cm of the saluang darek.

It is an end-blown, duct flute, with a notch cut out and a piece of reed threaded through the head to create a duct. There are just 3 finger holes. The flute is used to accompany regional dendang.
