Song in the Sumatran Highlands

Types of Songs

One of the most important ways of knowing and organizing the repertoire is through type of song. These types are used both by performers and devotees. Types are connected to general emotional sentiment of the song, a sentiment that structures lyrics to some extent. But the types also have musical characteristics. Most practitioners use three song types:
  1. ratok (sad songs, literally from the word "lament")
  2. gembira (happy songs) and those in between, and
  3. satangah tiang (literally "half mast"), which are sometimes described as "half happy" and sometimes as "half sad," depending on who is talking.
There are also a large collections of songs from the region called Singgalang. Some people refer to these songs--a very distinctive collection--as a fourth category and others refer to them as a subcategory of ratok.
