Song in the Sumatran Highlands

Lists of songs

This pathway presents several lists of songs, each organized alphabetically by title. The titles of these tunes are not fixed, meaning there is variability in those titles. One person may know the song by a specific title while another person knows the same tune by a different title. For example, "Tabek Sarojo" and "Koto Tuo Tabek Sarojo." I have tried to indicate where there might be overlap or redundancy in a title under the listing for each singular title.
  1. The Complete List of Songs: This is the list of all songs encountered in this project. The total number of songs has already and will continue to evolve as the project evolves: new titles are encountered while others are clarified. The contents here were constituted through several means: 1) the lists I accessed, which are included separately and 2) titles provided by people during performances, either someone with whom I attended the performance or someone I later worked with to help identify the recordings. The titles for songs I heard or witnessed are based on personal interpretation and knowledge of the person to whom I talked. I have not included the titles to songs encountered only on commercial recordings in my possession. That would add even more titles to the list. I decide to omit them as songs are composed for the recording industry and I am interested in those that pass into performative practice.
  2. Te E's List of Songs: When I interviewed Te E in 2016, she furnished a list of songs that she had been compiling over the years. I include an alphabetized list, along with scans of her list, which indicate the way she organized the repertoire
  3. Mardjani et al.'s List: this list comes from a research report entitled Dendang Minangkabau. Their list of X number of songs includes all the titles they encountered about dendang throughout Minangkabau regions. That means there are titles from other genres and traditions, not just saluang. My list extracted from Mardjani et al.'s complete list are those titles that were clearly affiliated with the darek. I excluded those that had no indication of region or those that were affiliated with the rantau, as they are affiliated with other musical traditions and the songs may not have made their way into saluang repertoire.
