Styles of saluang

People use the word "saluang" to refer to a range of practices that involve the instrument, the saluang darek. But there are a number of different musical styles that involve this instrument. I use the term "style" to refer to musical practices circumscribed first and foremost by choices of instrumentation and secondly by the kinds of repertoire covered. The context for the performance of these styles does not always map neatly onto the styles, meaning context does not predetermine style, and the terms for the styles morph in reaction to emergent styles and practices. For example, the term "saluang klasik" which refers to the main musical style discussed in this site was non-existent and not relevant until there were newer styles that mixed in other instrumentation.

To give you a sense of how radically different these styles can sound, I have included three different versions of the same song, "Singgalang Jaya." Listen to the examples and then explore the styles below.
